Mistakes on tax returns happen more often than you'd think: a forgotten 1099, the wrong filing status, a child left off. The good news — it can be fixed. That's what Form 1040-X, the amended return, is for.
When you need a 1040-X
- You left out income — for example, a 1099 arrived after you filed
- You used the wrong filing status
- You left out or incorrectly claimed a dependent
- You missed a deduction or credit you qualified for
When you don't
The IRS usually corrects math errors on its own. If you forgot to attach a form or schedule, the IRS will often just send a letter asking for it. In both cases, you don't need a separate amended return.
Deadlines
To claim an additional refund, file the 1040-X within 3 years of filing the original return, or within 2 years of paying the tax — whichever is later. If the correction means you owe tax, file as soon as possible to reduce interest and penalties.
How to file and how long it takes
Today, a 1040-X can be filed electronically. Processing usually takes 8–12 weeks, sometimes up to 16. You can check the status on the IRS website with Where's My Amended Return?.
What about Illinois?
If the changes to your federal return affect your state tax, you also need to file an amended Illinois return — IL-1040-X.
If you never filed at all
That's a different situation: missed years are filed as regular returns for that year. If you were owed a refund, you can generally only claim it within about three years — after that, the money stays with the IRS. So it's best not to wait.
