What documents you need for your tax return

Well-prepared documents are half of a good tax return. The more complete the information, the less chance of missing a deduction or credit. Here's a basic checklist for a personal return (Form 1040).

1. Personal information

  • Photo ID
  • SSN or ITIN — for you, your spouse and each child
  • Dates of birth for everyone on your return
  • Last year's return, if you have it — it shows a lot of useful details

2. Income

  • W-2 — from every employer
  • 1099-NEC or 1099-K — if you work as a contractor or are self-employed
  • 1099-INT and 1099-DIV — interest and dividends
  • 1099-G — unemployment benefits or a state tax refund
  • Rental income and expenses, if you rent out property

3. Expenses that can lower your tax

  • 1098 — mortgage interest
  • 1098-T — college tuition
  • 1098-E — student loan interest
  • Childcare costs: the amount, provider name and their tax ID
  • Receipts for donations to charities
  • If self-employed: business expenses — supplies, mileage, phone, software

4. Health insurance

If you have coverage through the Marketplace (healthcare.gov), you'll need Form 1095-A — the return can't be filed without it.

5. For your refund

Your bank account and routing numbers — so the refund goes straight to your account. It's the fastest way.
